Sounds like turnstile sounds like them
“Sounds like Turnstile.”
These three words made up the entirety of the first opinion I read online a few weeks ago of Quicksand’s new record, ‘Bring On The Psychics’. Too funny. The person who wrote it had to be joking, right? I mean…I certainly laughed. Even though I hadn’t heard much at all of the album yet, it seemed to me like such an absurd thing to say. Many folks, myself included, consider Quicksand’s first two records released way back in the 90s to be sub-genre defining works of art. ‘Slip’ and ‘Manic Compression’ have served as blueprints for much of the post-hardcore that has followed over the decades since. It’s not a stretch at all to say that Quicksand packed the soil that Turnstile and others build upon today. The idea that they would so blatantly borrow from a band that was so CLEARLY influenced by them seems kinda silly.

Funny enough, these three words also made up the entirety of my own initial thoughts when I ultimately got to check out ‘Bring On The Psychics’ on release day. Shocking, but undeniable. While the album’s solid guitar and bass tones, start-stop riffing and crash-driven drums have always been a part of Quicksand’s sound, Walter’s more rough and “shouty” vocal approach along with the modern production qualities heard here on the first few tracks totally give off “is this Turnstile?” vibes. The record is not a total emulation project though. Unlike Turnstile who often venture off into atmospheric loops and passages, Walter and the guys stick to the basics, never really straying too far away from the guitar, drums and bass loud rock that served as the soundtrack for much of Gen X. Things really settle in by the midway point of the record with the song “Supercollider,” a complete banger that sounds straight off of ‘Manic Compression’.
Overall, ‘Bring On The Psychics’ is a blast. Great record. After spinning it for a couple weeks, I’m yet again left with the opinion that Walter, Sergio and Alan are the real deal. True punk thru and thru. In it for the long haul. Forever youthful. They don’t bend, fold or break with the trends of the day. They grow with them, taking it all in, keeping a foot in their rich history and a fist in the future.
With age comes experience and wisdom. Quicksand begets Turnstile begets Quicksand.
