Hooks galore
By Manuel Gemperli
Before I get into any genre tags I need to point out the brilliant songwriting on Home Front’s “Watch It Die”. Let me just say hooks upon hooks upon hooks. The focus on carefully crafted, catchy melodies makes me think that these songs would have worked in any stylistic arrangement, even if it had been stripped down to the bare minimum instrumentally. Strip down they didn’t though. Home Front come at you with a post punk/new wave sound, presented with a punk attitude. Yes, you will be reminded of some 80’s heroes listening to this, conjuring images of old school MTV videos, but the modern, punchy production and of course the timeless melodies keep the record from ever falling into mere nostalgia territory. No, this is fresh, urgent and vibrant. What a fun album. Extra points for making Michael Monroe of my beloved Hanoi Rocks appear before my mind’s eye in several spots throughout the record. I wonder if I’m the only one to think this.
