Drive-By Truckers - The Unraveling

The Drive-By Truckers have always been vigilant observers of their surroundings. As progressive-minded people growing up in a predominantly conservative environment, their point of view was always unique, their character studies always full of empathy. On “The Unraveling” they sounded angrier than on many of their prior albums. The moody atmosphere of most of the songs fits the feeling of resignation that lingers throughout the album perfectly, for example when Hood wonders how he can explain to his kids that sometimes all those in power are willing to offer are “useless thoughts and prayers”. Both Hood and Cooley are gifted with an outstanding knack for melodies and their stories are as relevant as ever, over 20 years into a tumultuous career. - Manu
