Avenged Sevenfold - Life Is But A Dream...
At a point in their career when many bands basically just keep recording the same album with mildly less exciting results Avenged Sevenfold decided to break all of the rules and release a record that is as batshit crazy as it is fucking brilliant. There isn’t one song that doesn’t include at least one screeching, completely unexpected left turn and throughout the album you find traces of pretty much any genre you could possibly think of. This could have been an absolute mess. I hate it when bands are weird just for weirdness’ sake and mistake it for greatness. But because the individual ideas are so great, often so catchy, so carefully pieced together and played with such enthusiasm it resulted in one of the most entertaining and exciting modern metal records I’ve heard in a long time. Somehow, they managed to branch out in a million different directions and still sound like themselves. As a guitar fan, I have to give a special shoutout to Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance. We’ve known that these guys can shred (and that they have the best stage names) for a long time, but their playing (not only on this record, but especially) is so inventive and so diverse that they’re miles apart from guys who are mainly just trying to impress other guitarists. The song, the vibe, the feel always come first. The whole band turned this album into a celebration of boundless creativity. And it is utterly enjoyable to listen to over and over again. Hands down, my favorite album of the year so far. I pity the elitists that will pass this one up just because of who created it. What a triumph! - Manu
